The COMPAGNIE D’ASSURANCE D’HAITI S.A. (CAH) is an expansion of the Insurance General Agency of the Armand Insurance Group that was created over 60 years (in 1952) and has represented successively prestigious international insurance companies such as Hartford Insurance Company of Connecticut, CNA (Continental National American Financial Corporation) and AGF (Assurances Générales de France). In 1988, AGF decides to withdraw from the Haitian market for political reasons, and the Armand Insurance Group then founds a Haitian insurance company under the name Multi-Assurances S.A. In 1991, the Groupe Dynamic S.A. acquires Multi-Assurances S.A. In 1993, GD acquires CAH, founded in 1973 by the American Life Insurance Company of the American International Group (AIG). January 1, 2001, Multi-Assurances S.A. merges with CAH. Today COMPAGNIE D’ASSURANCE D’HAITI S.A. is the oldest insurance company in the market and has two main divisions:
- Life and Health Insurance
- Property and Casualty Insurance
1 Life and Health Insurance
In 1998, the new CAH opens the first outpatient clinic, named Multimed, in the French Hospital of Haiti under the supervision of the Medical Director of CAH at the time, Dr. George C. Nelson. Two years later, the second Multimed clinic is set up in the medical complex at Unimed, Delmas32. On 16 May 2013, CAH opens its third Multimed clinic in the Canape Vert Hospital.
For the past 15 years, the Multimed clinics, that have been designed following the american HMO model (Health Maintenance Organization), receive thousands of CAH insured every month. The Multimed structure now has nearly thirty doctors and dentists plus an additional network of another thirty specialists. The great advantage of Multimed is prepaid care. With Multimed, the insured does not have to pay out large sums of money to be reimbursed later; the insured makes a disbursement of approximately 20% of total costs, and this to the satisfaction of employers, employees and family leaders. The 3 Multimed clinics offer medical and dental services along with their own pharmacy. Today over 50% of the CAH insured use the Multimed network for their health care. The quality of services offered by Multimed, the simplicity of the prepaid model and the proximity of hospital care make it Haiti’s reference in terms of medical care provided by an insurance program.
2. Property and Casualty Insurance
The P&C branch is characterized by the diversity of its insurance products. CAH studies the risks of its customers with them to provide an insurance policy that fits their needs. CAH provides insurance for homes, businesses and institutions against fire, natural disasters, riots, vandalism, accidents and various other risks. COMPAGNIE D’ASSURANCE D’HAITI S.A. also offers auto insurance, insurance of air and sea cargo and road transport. CAH offers cover against the risk of liability, construction insurance, and also business interruption.
